In April of 2001 Larry Lyons, at that time a member of Post 8180 in Seoul, Korea coordinated with the Department of Pacific Area Commander Bill Wichmann and the Chief of Staff on the feasibility of opening a VFW Post at K-16 Seoul Air Base. With the anticipated growth to swell to 1400 soldiers by 2005, K-16 would be a viable Post that could have expected growth to a 500 member VFW Post.

In May Commander Wichmann appointed Larry Lyons as Asst. Chief of Staff for Korea an as Post Organizer for the new Post.

On May 22nd, 2001 Larry Lyons had the 1st Organizational Meeting on opening a VFW Post. At this meeting, Larry Lyons was elected as temporary Commander and Dave Strictland as temporary Quartermaster. Within 2 weeks we had enough members, 25 to request a charter start up kit.

At the 2nd Organizational Meeting a name was chosen for the new Post. The name selected was Warner-Patterson Memorial name after SSG Jennifer T. Warner and SPC Thomas A. Patterson. These two soldiers where assigned to the 304th Signal Company located at Camp Colbern, Korea, approx 15 mile from K-16. In one of the worst monsoon rains of all times, they where in the field in support of UFL 01 at CP Tango. During these rains the mountain above their campsite had a landslide and their camp was buried.

At the end of June we continued to grow in membership to 101 members. Our Application for Charter was submitted to Department of Pacific Area for approval.

On the 2nd of July 01, Commander, Bill Wichmann signed and submitted it to National Headquarters for approval.

In July we received the Post Number that would be assigned to us and that was Post 11016, the 11 was for it is the 11th letter in the alphabet (K) and 16 for the Army Post that we are station (K-16)

On 28 July than CinC John Gwizdak instituted the Post and than he installed the following Post Officers: Commander, Larry Lyons, SVC, Rick Kinneman, JVC, Aaron Scott, Quartermaster, Chris Vine, Adjutant, Rebecca Artiga, Advocate James Strickland, Surgeon Joel Duval, Service Officer Scot Platz, Trustee 3, Eric Hicks, Trustee 2, Rodney Seirsen, Trustee 1 Sarah Smith. There were a total of 63 members that were inducted as VFW Members that day. All Posts in District III, Korea had representatives at this Installation, which gave the young VFW mentorship and guide ness along with wishes on a fruitful growth a new VFW Post. In addition to the CinC being there, Bruce Harder the Director of National Security and Foreign Affairs for the VFW was also there.

Though out the year the Post continued to grow and at the end of the year our membership had grown to 151 Members.

Prior to the Department Convention the following Officers where installed by the outgoing Commander, Larry Lyons: Commander, Rick Kinneman, SVC Glenn Meadows, JVC Carl Krampitz, Quartermaster Tim Gawerecki, Adjutant, Carl Krampitz, Judge Advocate, Dave Strickland, Surgeon, Dave Lay, Chaplain, Dale Hunter, Service Officer, Larry Lyons, Trustee 3, James Haggerty, Trustee 2, Billy Simmons, Trustee 1, Ken Greenawalt.

The year was full of programs, some of the highlighted ones where going to Camp Yongin during UFL 02 and cooking hotdogs and hamburgers for over 300 deployed troops from all services. The post also collected 1,600 lbs of rice and donated them a local orphanage. They hosted a Christmas Party and a New Year Eve Party for the troops at K-16. They made numerous Hospital visits, Co Sponsored with Post 8180 on its VOD and Youth Essay Programs. They also raised over $2,500.00 for the “Attack on America Trust Fund” that VFW National HQ set up for the 9/11 victims.

At the Department of Pacific Area Convention in Pattaya Thailand in June 02 our Commander Larry Lyons was selected as All State Commander, Captain, He also received a plaque from the National as a Century Recruiter. Carl Krampitz was selected as Outstanding New Post Member of the Year also. The Post received a plague for Outstanding MIP Recruiting Post for the Year and also received National Recognition Award Certificates for Outstanding Post Americanism Program Activities, Youth Activities, Youth Essay, VOD and Outstanding Post Community Service awards. They also received a Certificate for Supporting the Political Action Committee. The Post also received a certificate as a Life Member of the National Home.   

Under the leadership of our Post Commander Rick Kinneman he has followed the foot prints of our Jr. Post Commander and is leading our Post with community service involvement as of November 02 with completing 84 projects with 252 volunteers working 967 hours and spending $5,065.20. Some of these projects were again supporting UFL troops out at Songnam Tent city with a BBQ, Passing out 10,000 cookies, supporting local soldiers with financial help and collecting clothes for the local orphanage. We have conducted numerous Membership drives and even recruited members for other post’s that where TDY to our area.

As of November 02 we are currently at 106% in membership with 38 Life Members, 101 New Members, 18 Continuous Members, and 11 Reinstated Members, which totals to 161 Members.

The year continued with Commander Rick and Membership Chairman, SVC Glenn Meadows pushing for new recruits. The year ended with our Post Membership reaching 247% of last year membership of 151 members. We closed out the year with 373 members.

Following our Department Commanders motto of “Reaching out into the Communities.” Post 11016 did just that. Though-out the year we completed 172 projects with 974 volunteers working 1,865 hours and spending $8,893.87. Some of those key projects where adopting A Company 1/52nd AVN as our adopted unit and we are currently hosting their quarterly Hail& Farewells, we sent 50 Care Packages to the troops in Iraq, we sponsored Christmas, New Years, World Cup and Welcome back parties for the troops here at K-16. Another program that they started was sending out mini care packages to the troops at K-16 when they go out into the field.

The Membership of Post 11016 elected the following top 4 officers to hold the new years positions: Larry Lyons, Commander, Scott McPhearson, SVC, Rick Kinneman as JVC and for the 2nd year in a row Tom Garweckie as quartermaster. Bob Henault the Department SVC swore these and the other officers in at the May meeting.

At the Department convention in Pattaya Thailand, SVC Glenn Meadows was selected as Membership Chairman of the Year and Commander Rick Kinneman was selected as “All State Commander” and Larry Lyons, Rick Kinneman and Glenn Meadows received Century Awards. As of today Commander Kinneman will also be “All American Commander” for Division 9.

The year 2002 – 2003 was a very successful year for Post 11016. Commander Lyons has sent a membership of 500 members for the New Year and again to get out into our community.
