Post 10216 had a great month commemorating POW/MIA Recognition with many events conducted with Osan Air Base. Events began on 2-3 September when the VFW hosted a softball tournament that included 10 softball teams from throughout the Pacific. The tournament was opened with a POW/MIA Ceremony, taps and National Anthem. Curley Knepp and Billy Quintero represented the VFW and 10 other VFW members were involved. The Tournament is organized by VFW Member Rob Waddle (CMSgt USAF, Ret).
Our commemoration continued on 15 September when the VFW and 51st Fighter Wing at Osan conducted a formal POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony at the Wing Headquarters Building. Department of Pacific Areas Vice Commander Larry Lyons was the Guest Speaker and gave a heart felt speech. The 51st Fighter Wing Commander, Brigadier General Reynes, represented the Osan community. Two troop formations consisting of over 100 U.S. Air Force and Army troops and over 15 VFW members were present. The Ceremony included taps, Amazing Grace, National Anthem, the commemoration speech by Larry Lyons and a “missing man” fly over by an A-10 and F-16. This tremendously successful ceremony was organized by VFW Post Member, Major Brian Hemingway of the 51st Fighter Wing.
That same evening, the VFW participated in the U.S. Air Force Anniversary Ball celebrations. Jim Price, a found Post 10216 member and Tuskegee Airman, represented the VFW. The Post donated over 20 of their Korean War model aircraft for display and use at the Ball. In addition, the VFW’s MSgt Woods had over 12 of his World War II re-enactors participate in the ceremonies. Brig Gen Reynes told us “we couldn’t have done it without your VFW”. Jim Price helped cut the cake as the “oldest member” of the party. Post support was organized by Post Adjutant Keith Michael.
